My school is a large community school in the heart of Washington, D.C. Over 60 percent of the students are still mastering the English language. Many other of my students receive special accommodations for learning disabilities. Poverty within the surrounding neighborhood is evident. Most of my students come to school with very few if any supplies.
My students struggle with staying engaged with the work because there are so many other issues in their lives, but they love to learn and even come on Saturdays for extra instructional time!
I employ a variety of techniques to match my instruction to my students' strengths and weaknesses. I make my classroom light and fun to capture and spur their love of knowledge.
Technology is one of the ways in which I can spark their interest. Our classroom currently has three desktops and a few kindles. Occasionally, I can get my class into our computer lab, but my students are constantly disappointed when the computer lab is booked up for weeks at a time.
My Project
All students need access to the internet. My students understand that other students in our district have technology and that they are scrambling to get on to any device during school hours. These iPads will be located in a learning station within the classroom. During the school day, my students spend a great deal of time waiting and trying to access the lessons that are assigned. Our district has managed to buy several programs but they mean nothing if my students do not have a device to use. Many of my students do not have devices and or internet service in their homes. The comfort of knowing that they can stay up with others who are more fortunate would mean so much.
