All students in New York must pass the Regents Math A examination in order to obtain a Regents High School Diploma, and my job includes preparing freshmen and sophomore students to pass this examination. During the past year, another Teaching Fellow and I developed software libraries that allow us to sort all questions that have appeared on every previous Math A Regents examination by topic, textbook chapter, etc. These Regents Math A questions can be sorted and printed by themselves or combined with thousands of other math questions in our library to prepare worksheets and examinations for students.
Our experience in using this software has been fantastic, and being able to generate examinations by computer allows us to offer students opportunities to learn at different rates and to be tested or retested whenever they have mastered the materials. This is especially important in teaching ESL students, and over fifty percent of the students in my Brooklyn school are from other countries. Student reactions to this new, technology-driven approach are very positive, and I conduct a voluntary tutoring and retesting session every morning before regular classes begin. Five to fifteen students normally attend these voluntary sessions, and many have significantly improved their understanding of mathematics because they were provided with additional chances to succeed.
This technology-driven approach to assessment would be greatly improved if we had an inexpensive computer and printer in the tutoring/retesting classroom. Currently, I have to print all materials at home, and I never know exactly who will show up or what materials they will need. Hence, I usually print too much and I typically carry a 20 pound backpack of supplies on my daily commute to and from school. It would be great to be able to print on demand just what is needed in the classroom. Hence, my request is for an inexpensive computer and printer to help students in this voluntary tutoring and retesting classroom.
