My students come from a socioeconomically disadvantaged town in Alabama. Approximately 98% of our students are on free and reduced lunch.
The Media Center is the students hub for technology.
Students dream for a place to connect with colleges and universities, employment opportunities, and research databases using state of the art technological devices and software.
Connectivity opportunities that other students take for granted are limited at our school. Many students do not have the internet at home and look at the availability of the internet and computers in the media center. The requests of six new computer PCs complete with wireless peripherals would be a dream come true and replace ours out of date or broken equipment.
Helping our students' access information using computers provides more access to all areas of research. The faster they can get to the information the more chance we have for increased motivation to finish the projects and increase curiosity for the world around them.
The ability to expand access to any area of research means more equity for student access and more opportunities for students to explore interests in their professional future or careers.
The expression "reach out and touch someone can be considered poignant since computers allow students to see or view places, and people they would not otherwise get to see. This technology can drive a student to a place they never thought possible and may forever change the path they thought would never be available to them.
The savings on texts or the additional opportunities to increase resources available to all students increase equity for students. With limited funds for books and hardbound resources, the school and these computers will provide a vision and reality at a lower cost with a wider array of resources within a smaller space and less cost to the school.
