Our mission states, "We are a caring community of learners, dedicated to making the world a better place, through academic preparation, good manners, common sense and 100% effort." Every word of this statement is true. Being a military spouse, I have had the opportunity to teach at multiple schools. Our students are such hard working and respectful individuals.
Our second graders are held to a higher standard of achievement and behavior.
They are taught skills to collaborate and show respect towards others. We recently adopted STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) in our science curriculum. Students also participate in a cumulative project called Graduation by Demonstration. In this project, each student puts together a trifold poster of what they have learned in 2nd grade. They practice for weeks and then present to their teacher, family, and the principal. In the reflection pieces most students say that their favorite part is technology.
We make do with what we have, but there is one piece that is truly missing... technology in our classroom. Students have a short forty minute technology lab once a week. Other than that, they don't have access to technology in the classroom.
My Project
Students in my classroom will use Chromebooks for their research projects and during our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) units. They would also aide in reading centers and could be used as a tool to help with struggling learners.
It is very important to give students access to technology when they are young, after all it will be their future.
It will also increase engagement and enhance student learning.
As teachers, we are expected and required to incorporate technology into our lessons, but it is difficult when you are not provided with devices to use in your classroom. Currently, I have two desktop computers provided by the school. It would be wonderful to have Chromebooks to support our children in their digital learning journey!
