Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Latinos are the largest and fastest growing minority group in the United States. Latinos are also the largest minority group living in poverty. Latinos are also lagging behind all other minority groups in the U.S. in obtaining a four-year degree. More than 95% of my middle school students are Puerto Ricans, most living in poverty.
It is time to close the achievement gap and help my students, our future leaders of tomorrow, have the high quality, rigorous education they deserve!
My inclusive science class serves 110 middle school students daily, many living with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, post traumatic stress, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. There is virtually no science budget. The science room is an old elementary school room and is not properly equipped. It has taken a lot of creativity to make it all work for my enthusiastic science learners!
My Project
In this third technology request, we are so close to having a full set of Chromebooks so all students in each class can independently work on projects, conduct research and advance their learning by accessing online intervention programs.
Once we have a full set of Chromebooks, the way students will be able to access information related to the curriculum will be limitless!
Having some computers in the classroom this year, has already improved the projects we are able to conduct in class. This last request will bring our total to 29. My biggest class is 30 students presently and we are expecting more students from Puerto Rico this month. Allowing students to complete projects on Chromebooks will enhance their learning of the material while also teaching them real-world applications of technology usage in a growing global economy.
