Our classroom is very hands-on and inquiry based. The students are up and moving and discussing math in the real world. Our students are discovering math algorithms for themselves and not relying on memorization. The students are hungry for the additional resources on the Internet.
GMA is a magnet school for Traditional and Global Studies.
Our students are ready and excited to learn. We have a very diverse socio-economic population. Our school is about 50% magnet to bring our attendance up in the area. With that, we have about 48% on free or reduced lunch. Some of our students are able to bring their own devices to use in the classroom, however, we have many more students who would not be able to participate due to the lack of a device. Our computers are old and the students become frustrated. Our classroom collaborates and the Chromebook would allow the group learning to continue.
My Project
A typical day involves students moving about the room collaborating with peers. The Chromebooks would provide a station for technology use during our work stations. During our stations, students may focus on review, practice, or extend their learning by using the Internet for games and tutorials. Our work stations are hands-on, and I want each station to be interesting and worth spending valuable time in. Another use of the Chromebooks is for the students to produce collaborative projects using Google Docs and Slides including our Math Goal for Response, or writing in Math. The students will work together to process and prove their ideas. The sharing access that is gained from the Chromebooks not only increases buy-in from the students, it also improves their math language. I want my kids to be able to tell me in numbers, pictures, and words. The world is full of math, full of geometry, full of ratios and proportions.
The Chromebooks will give everyone an opportunity to use technology to learn and increase student involvement.
An increase in student involvement results in improved learning rates. My kids will learn life skills working on the Chromebooks: collaboration, resourcefulness, shopping for the best deal, safety on the Internet, sharing, love for learning.
