My Students

I have two very large kindergarten classes with 54 in all. to very active, happy kindergarteners. They love to learn and they love to explore. This being my first year teaching kindergarten, I am amazed at their curiosity and desire to dig deeper into subjects. I am watching them grow before my eyes and the change that happens during kindergarten is remarkable.

This group of students learn best when they are using all five of their senses and connecting their learning to their experiences.

We have a unique group of children. We have cultural and economic diversity. As well as academic learning, my kindergarteners are learning to regulate their emotions, take care of themselves by cleaning up, zipping their own coats, tying their own shoes, and to not talk when the teacher is talking.

I find that if I embed learning into activities that they enjoy and feel are playing, they have energy and enthusiasm. Sitting and listening only lasts for a few minutes so direct instruction must be explicit and my language precise. With new curriculum and goals, I am finding new ways to teach and meet their individual needs.

My Project

As a kindergarten teacher, I thought the effects of Covid-19 would be less apparent but as we started this year, our Entry Assessment showed a very unique set of data. We had more students score lower than every before with those who have not had any preschool or any schooling before this kindergarten class. In my afternoon class I had 18 kids test below 60% on the Kindergarten readiness assessment. With the new curriculum in Literacy (95% literacy) and in Math (iReady) technology is the key ingredient. All of the lessons have prepared Powerpoint/Slides that go with them daily. This lends itself to a Teacher Presentation iPad with a pencil that works in conjunction with the iPad.

The 10" iPad Air is made with the capabilities to fully interact a classroom in daily instruction, assessments, and classroom enrichment.

First and foremost in the Tier 1, daily instruction. Second, with the administration and data collection of mastery connect and iReady assessments. Third, the teacher iPad will enrich the classroom with Lexia management, instructional videos, skyward access, science and interacting as well as projecting students work for the class to see.

I am excited at the possibilities of using a teacher iPad to guide instruction and assessment in my kindergarten classroom. I am grateful to live in a time where we can be resilient and bounce back from a world-wide pandemic. Technology can help make this a smooth transition yielding measurable progress. Thank you!
