Research shows that active, hands-on experiences help to create deep learning that develops into ideas, theories, and then into creations that can change the world! As my students build, test, and experiment, they will develop critical thinking skills to answer questions such as why? how? what? and when? We have an exploration time three times a week, where my class has the opportunity to build, construct, engineer, and design. Each student is free to choose where and what he will do and build. Anecdotal notes are taken as I observe the children at work. I watch and record how they interact with others, follow their thought processes, and what discoveries they make. I can imagine how chain reactions are created with groups of 2 or 3--where they have to think about first, second, third, etc. I see them making their own conclusions and then adjusting those conclusions as they experiment. I see them building ramps and watching balls move and roll as they use blocks and other items in the classroom to create tracks. I can picture them using magnets to discover and to build, to lift and to create. I see creativity and imagination!
