My Students

"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." I work with multiple classes of students who all present with significant speech-language disabilities. The students that I serve include elementary (K-5) students who are multiply handicapped (e.g., cerebral palsy, down syndrome) and students on the autism spectrum. My students are learning to achieve functional communication skills, as well as, academic skills. This new way of learning has been extremely tough on myself and my students.

My students deserve to receive high-quality services that must be provided through technology due to the unusual circumstance we are in.

We are currently meeting each day online in a virtual classroom to continue to learn together through different engaging lessons and assignments. Speech therapy is being provided via live video every day. There is a lot that goes into making sure my students' needs are being met. Even though this is not the best situation, we are all working hard and trying our best each day! A new high-quality computer that is reliable and powerful enough to handle multitasking will allow me to provide the best possible services I can for my students.

My Project

The computer I am currently using to provide services to my students is old, beat up and on its way out. It constantly crashes, is slow, and at times has connectivity issues. This has a significant impact on my ability to provide the best services for my students. As one of thousands in a system in NYC who have requested new technology for remote learning, I am not sure how long I will be waiting to receive a new device. I also have no idea how long remote learning will last. My special needs students attend school year round and summer services will be provided remotely this year. Remote learning could potentially continue well into the Fall. We desperately need new technology sooner rather than later!

Speech therapy requires face-to-face connection and this new computer will help me provide that connection for my students from a distance.

High quality speech and language intervention is what my students desperately need right now. We spend more time with tech issues instead of actual learning. I want to spend as much time teaching and interacting with my students as I can. With a new computer, I will be able to download current apps and programs to enhance my lessons each day. It will allow me to save and upload documents with ease. It will also enhance my live sessions as my video clips and presentations will play without a hitch. Video modeling is so important for my students to continue to work on their communication skills.

My students are counting on me. I don't want to risk them losing their skills that they worked so hard to achieve. Updated technology will be the best gift that we could receive during this current situation. Please help me help my students succeed!
