Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While I oversee the English and math departments at a large, urban middle school, this project will serve the needs of approximately 60 students I work with who are English language learners many of whom have had trouble progressing in their acquisition and application of English and who are credit deficient in either math, English, or both. These students meet with me during their independent learning time before their school day starts and after school or on weekends. My students have many obstacles they are navigating while trying to be motivated and successful students. They have been in a distance learning model since March of 2020, and it has been a struggle for the majority of them, due to unstable connectivity, chaotic living environments, illness (our school is in the zip code representing the highest COVID infection rate for our city), language barriers, and the need for more individualized attention and assistance from their teachers. Despite these challenges and hurdles, my students continue to pursue proficiency in order to achieve.
My Project
The document camera and the writing tablet will help me assist students on their screens as they are navigating their lessons, constructing responses to writing prompts or questions, and solving complex, multi-step word problems. With these tools, I will be able to identify within a student's work where misconceptions or mistakes are, highlight those problems, reteach for better understanding, and notate where and when students have captured the essence of their learning target or objective. The document camera will help me showcase examples, manipulatives, regalia (for language learning), and exemplar pieces of work to assist students with their progress and pursuit of success.
