My Students

My students attend a small, rural, Title I school in East Tennessee.

Approximately 88% of my students live in poverty and often face difficult personal challenges. Living in such a rural area keeps them isolated from many of the modern conveniences that kids in more urban settings are accustomed to. Access to technology is is very limited for most of my students do to financial issues and/or lack of access to reliable Internet service. I am inspired by their ability to come to school each day eager to learn. I am honored to be able to help them reach their full potential.

My Project

Right now I have 5 iPads that we use for various activities in the classroom. However, in order for my students to be "tech savvy" they also need to have access to a MacBook. The requested MacBook with mouse and case, would help us to take many of our iPad activities to the "next level", by giving students access to word processing and typing. It will allow them to do valuable research, collaborate on projects, improve typing and writing skills, and even create presentations. This laptop will allow them to work on online skill based assessments that will help me track their progress and find "holes" in their learning that need to be addressed. It will also give them a computer to access online test items and tutorials in order to prepare for state assessments that are now on a computer, and I will be able to hook up this laptop to our Promethean board for presentations and to complete lessons. Having the laptop accessible to me would help me to integrate technology in my class and enhance my students' learning.

Donations for this project will help my students level the playing field with students from higher income homes.

They will have access to 21st Century technology that will help them be prepared for future college and career experiences.
