My school services over 750 Pre-K through fourth grade students. We are a high poverty area with a very transient population. The majority of our students are on free or reduced lunch.
"Mathematicians are born, not made."- Henri Poincare.
This year I teach 47 students. They come to school excited to learn new math skills. Currently I have 16 students performing below 3rd grade level in math. With the Louisiana State Standards and the Compass Evaluation System, the bar has been raised for student expectations. The level of rigor in the classroom has increased. It is important to engage and provide interventions to the struggling students as well as engage and enrich the remaining students. With the use of a computer math center during small group, I can provide the appropriate instruction that can increase understanding and provide hands-on activities to meet the needs of my students.
My Project
Students need a math station where they can practice their facts independently. The chromebooks and headphones will give students an opportunity to work independently on computer based programs purchased by our school. Fast Math is one program used for students to increase their fact fluency. They work on their own level and move to a new skill once mastery is achieved By having the students work independently, this provides me time to intervene with students needing one-on-one or small group instruction.
The wobble chairs will help those students that have a hard time keeping still in their seats.
They can move about in the wobble chairs without disturbing those around them. The wobble chairs will be used at desks, small group table, and the computer station.
