"Tech for Tots" is my personal initiative to put hands-on technology into my kindergarten classroom. Please help get our little hands working and learning in a whole new way! Technology purchased will reach across all academic areas and assist in reaching new National curriculum demands.
I currently teach at a Title One School in rural Western North Carolina.
Our school consists of approximately 500 students, a majority of those students come from poverty stricken situations. Among this number of students, many are homeless. My classroom is made of 20 students. Over 60% of my students are on free and reduced lunch. An astounding 50% are served Title One Reading. Our local community has suffered from the National economic downturn and plummeted our community into a ghost town. We can only revive our community by investing in our children.
Our parents have not lost hope in their children. They strive to instill the value of education in their children and hard times aside our school is still a pillar or our town. People often say " It takes a village to raise a child", this holds especially true for this community. It does take a village. However, the village we are living and working in lack critical resources to produce learners ready for a big future.
My Project
The availability of an iPad in my classroom opens up a mecca of learning possibilities. Our iPad will be used to conduct daily whole group math and language arts lessons. I will be connecting our iPad to our LCD project to provide an increased quality of visual learning. We will use our iPad as a daily independent learning station. Children will have access to the iPad during our literacy work station time. I will ensure each child is working within applications that meet individual goals and ensure their personal academic success. The iPad will be used in small group reading and math instruction. It will serve as a tangible tool for children who need extra visual motor support and as a rewarding enrichment tool for students meeting personal goals. Our iPad will also be used as an assessment tool. There are applications available that assist teachers in tracking students progress. This assessment data will be used to make informed educational decisions for all students.
Technology is critical in supporting academic demands.Although I have a working computer in my classroom, its not accessible for my students.
My kindergarten children are only able to visit our computer once a week. This is not enough and I need your help. Teachers are preparing children for college and entrance into the workforce. Research states, the jobs I am preparing my students for do not even exist yet, and all future jobs will require the use of technology! Technology is the Key!
