My Students

Computers are the way of the future. Unfortunately, the computers at our school are decidedly from the past. Most of the computers are aging laptops that were purchased over seven years ago. Many are missing keys, most are unable to connect to the Internet, and all are on their last legs.

This is in sharp contrast to our young, bright students.

Our students number over 600, and most come from high-needs backgrounds, which is why our school is able to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students. Our students are also diverse, representing over 17 different nationalities and ethnicity. Most importantly, our students are hungry for technology and technology-based education. The students at our school are hip to the latest technology, and understand how integrated technology will be to their future lives. As such, they desire to learn more and more about both consuming content and creating content in the digital realm. This is our first year offering Advanced Placement Computer Science, and the class roster filled up within two days of the course offering being sent out.

My Project

We are asking for 30 Acer Aspire touch screen laptops to be a traveling computer lab at our school. The reasons we picked these specific computers are five-fold: (1) Access: These computers are incredibly easy-to-use, and as such will be accessible for our entire range of students. Specifically, the touchscreen capabilities will help our students with multiple modalities of learning access content. (2) Support: These computers are easy to image and reset whenever we encounter problems. (3) Durable: These computers are solidly constructed, with minimal plastic components. This ensures that they will survive in multiple classrooms across multiple years. (4) Reasonable Pricing: If we had purchased computers through our district's purchasing programs, we would have had to spend substantially more money for inferior products. (5) Multi-functional: Since these will be in a cart, they can be used in all subjects, from programming AP Computer Science to English Language Arts.

Our workforce is being required to be increasingly competent in technology.

As someone who is deeply invested in urban education, it pains me to see bright students unable to compete with their peers because of their lack of technological prowess. It is absolutely vital for our students to understand that computers are not a toy to use occasionally, but a tool to accomplish their goals. The first step is actually getting the computers. Join us on our students first steps.
