Tech and Atmosphere in the Music Classroom

My students need fluorescent light filters to keep them calm and focused. They also need headphone splitters to work together on technological music projects, like Garage Band compositions.

My Students

My students walk into Music twice a week eager for a creative outlet. We begin each class with singing, then dive right into the "work" at hand, be it learning a new instrument, composing music, or learning the steps of a traditional dance. I am grateful everyday for the opportunity to work with such amazing students!

I teach at a Title I school in Portland, Oregon where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Many of my students receive a backpack full of food each weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families. You wouldn't know that so many of these children face such hardships because they come in so excited and ready to learn!

My Project

As we try to meet the needs of children with traumatic backgrounds, the classroom atmosphere plays an important role. My goal is to keep the room calm and organized, which my students clearly appreciate. With no windows to the outside and fluorescent lighting, my classroom is at an immediate disadvantage. Blue light can do wonders to reduce anxiety that leads to behavioral problems.

With fewer behavioral issues, we can increase our learning and time on task.

I'm looking forward to seeing my students calmer and ready to learn.

Additionally, it can be difficult keeping up with technology in the music classroom. My students have access to iPads in their classrooms, so I'd like to make it possible to bring their iPads to class and create music together! With these headphone splitters, my students will be able to work in small groups to compose music.
