My classroom is just one of the many that serves over 750 students at my K-5 elementary school. All of our population receives free or reduced lunch, and we all start our day with breakfast in our classroom.
My students are energetic, creative, and love positive adult attention.
Our daily classroom routine incorporates lots of movement and music. I work hard to make the material as relevant and meaningful to their lives as possible in order to motivate my students to love learning and participate in class. We start and end every day with a hug or a high five, because I want my students to know how important they each are to me, and how much I value their education.
As a teacher in a low income community, my students come into the classroom with a variety of challenges and personal experiences. At our school, we are working hard every day to try to close the achievement gap for our students. We are working to meet the basic needs of our students, along with giving them an excellent and enjoyable education.
Starting new this year, my school has Friday Clubs for all students from grades 3 through 5. The purpose of these clubs is to expose our students to activities that they would not normally get the opportunity to participate in. It also allows us to connect with students in nonacademic ways to build stronger relationships and to share our passion with them. I chose soccer because I have been playing since I was a little girl and hope that they will love playing just as I do!
I also hope my club can help my students build teamwork and leadership skills that will be helpful to them inside the classroom as well.
They will also get to exercise and move around first thing in the morning, which will help students be more focused and awake during class. These soccer balls will give me the means to really teach my students about the sport, and allow them to exercise while getting to know students they would not otherwise have met.
