Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I’ve been teaching kindergarten for four years. In all 4 of my years of teaching, I find this year to be more interesting than the others because I have very active and curious minds in my classroom.
93% of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and most of them are Spanish speakers.
Although these unique students lack prior knowledge, they do not shy away from working hard or exploring new things. This year, when we first started our school year, 98% of my students didn’t know their letters, sounds, and numbers. 19 weeks into the school year, 97% of my students know their letters, sounds, and numbers, and this was only possible through small group learning and team work.
My Project
Through Magna tiles, the students will learn math, engineering, and how to give and receive help from others. As I observe my kindergartners, I find that their favorite word is “me” and I would like to change that mindset to “us”.
When students successfully learn how to work with others, they learn how to overcome differences and become more compassionate, caring, and loving human beings.
In kindergarten, team building skills could only be learned through structured play; in order to effectively teach an extremely important skill and to get extraordinary results, I need some team building supplies such as Magna tiles Master Set in my classroom. I would really appreciate if you can assist me in changing the mindset of my young students so they will become generous, loving, and productive citizens of our society.
