Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a school that has a diverse culture. Over 90% of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Many students come from difficult family situations and different socioeconomic standpoints. Though there are many differences between the students there is one common factor to keep in mind.

Regardless of their lives and circumstance, the children in my classroom walk in knowing that they are loved, and together, we have a passion for learning.

In my classroom we work hard together and my students know the importance of education. Most of my students come from a home that speaks multiple languages. Some of my students, come in speaking no english at all. Through hard work and dedication my students leave improving their academic, but also oral language and social skills! It is amazing to see the progress each day. First grade is where they really learn to read, and where their writing and math skills take off. I may be the teacher, but I learn so much from the blends of culture combined with their personalities! There is no greater joy than being a part of this learning community.

My Project

My students needs 3 tablets, with cases and headphones, to complete center rotations effectively. Each day, students have the opportunity to work online with interactive learning plans. The interactive websites are engaging and fun for the students. With these programs they can improve their reading, math, and language skills. Our classroom does not currently have enough technology to support the groups each day. We currently have 3 computers, but to support a group effectively we need 6 computers or tablets.

With your help, my class can continue to use the tablets daily to be able to execute more interactive projects and activities.

This project would help reach more students in my room per day. We can use the new tablets to give the students another avenue to help their learning. When completing center work, we can use the camera on the tablets to help students who have difficulty completing the problem record their questions and post them on the discussion board for me to address. While we are in reading we can help a student who does yet read listen to books on the tablet to increase their exposure. During writing, students could use padlet online to create interactive stories that foster creativity and collaboration. The students could also use the tablets to take pictures of their work to post on our online class website. Students can receive individualized instruction from programs that are ALREADY active in my school. These 3 tablets would increase the quality of the individual learning time.

The addition of the tablets would help my students build their skills in all subject areas throughout each day. Students would have the consistency to learn and grow independently and to build the technological skills needed in the 21st century.
