As the teacher of the World’s Greatest Class, I am keenly aware of the technological revolution that is sweeping across the world. I know I need to embrace those technological marvels that will enhance the educational lives of the students that are placed in my care.
The 32 students in my homeroom as well as the 67 other students with whom I teach science and health concepts on a rotational basis are bright and imaginative.
They carry with them the innate ability to adapt to a changing technological environment and they quickly understand the concepts that are being taught, especially when the introduction and the reinforcement of a concept is coupled with technology. These facts alone qualify them to have the best technology available.
My Project
An Apple TV digital multimedia receiver and a projector carry with them the ability to enhance every aspect of the curriculum I teach, while providing more interaction with my students in large and small groups.
With these devices coupled with an iPad2, I can display photographs and share stories of the men and women that were engulfed in the American Civil War one hour and help them better understand the world of fractions the next hour. I can take them on an interactive tour of the Solar System, display the skeletal structure of a human being, or demonstrate the wonders of magnetism while helping my students keep abreast of current events.
In conclusion, I know these technological tools come at a steep price.
Sadly, I don’t have the personal means to bring them into my classroom, and neither does the educational system that I interact with. They simply cannot provide these valuable resources. Our district is struggling to keep its head above water as changing technology rushes at them like a bull in a china closet.
