We are starting to read texts now that most students know their letters and sounds. Kids can follow along as I read \"Pip the Pup\" and \"Kit\". The stories are easy to change out using the creative tonies. The students' favorite Tonie is \"The Laurie Berkner Band\". The moment our calming corner was set up, my students gravitated toward it—they love settling into the soft seating, exploring the sensory tools, and especially running their fingers through the fluffy rug. It has quickly become one of their favorite places to read, decompress, and reset.\r\n\r\nMany of my students face challenges such as anxiety, ADHD, and the effects of trauma, which can make it difficult for them to stay focused and engaged. Yet every day, they show resilience, creativity, and a strong desire to succeed. Your gift has given them a meaningful way to manage big emotions and regain control when the world feels overwhelming.\r\n\r\nThe calming corner you helped fund is already making a noticeable impact. Students are using it to take mindful breaks, self-regulate, and return to their work with renewed confidence and clarity. By supporting their emotional needs, you are not only helping them academically—you are helping them grow in ways that will benefit them for life.\r\n\r\nWhat makes my students truly special is their perseverance. They work hard, even when faced with challenges that many adults would struggle with. This calming space gives them a place to breathe, regroup, and believe in themselves. Share a specific classroom project or moment.\r\nOur classroom has been buzzing with excitement thanks to the incredible range of materials we received. During our centers, students rotate through stations where they can practice academic skills while using hands-on tools like the Coogam wooden stacking towers, magnetic tiles, and the magnetic fraction circles. One of my favorite moments so far was during a math block: students used the fraction tiles to complete their worksheets, and then proudly checked their work by building the fractions with the magnets. Meanwhile, another group used the stacking game as a reward station, and the room was filled with cheering as they strategized to keep the tower from toppling.\r\n\r\nThe new floor cushions have also transformed our reading corner—students love grabbing a cushion, picking out a book like We're All Wonders or Where the Sidewalk Ends, and settling into a quiet space to read comfortably.\r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\nThey were ecstatic! The students gasped when they saw the huge set of magnetic tiles and immediately started imagining what they would build. Several students were thrilled to test out the new countdown timer during group challenges, and the carpet sweeper instantly became the \"cool job\" of the day. They couldn't believe how many new books we added to our class library, including favorites like A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue, The Recess Queen, and After the Fall. Their joy and sense of ownership over these materials were incredible to witness.\r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps for your students on a current classroom lesson or project?\r\nNext, we'll be using the science magnet sets to begin simple investigations during our forces and motion unit. Students will rotate between exploring magnetism, practicing time-management skills with the visual timer, and building STEM structures using the magnetic tiles and cars. In reading, we'll continue using our new social-emotional learning books to guide discussions about kindness, empathy, and cooperation.\r\n\r\nThe variety of tools—academic, behavioral, and organizational—has given us the flexibility to design centers where students can learn, practice, collaborate, reset, and even clean up independently. These materials will support our class all year long, and we are so grateful for the donors who made this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1755710280477,"projectUrl":"project/mrs-swansons-3rd-grade-class/9595071/","projectTitle":"Mrs. Swanson's 3rd Grade Class","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Swanson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9636312"},{"teacherId":2377860,"projectId":9461423,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our first graders have been busy building, creating, and imagining like never before! The LEGO set and Magna-Tiles you helped provide have transformed our classroom into a hub of creativity and hands-on learning.\r\nStudents are eager to plan and construct incredible creations - from tall towers and tiny towns to imaginative vehicles and colorful patterns. These materials have become a natural way for students to explore important concepts in math, science, and engineering while also strengthening their teamwork and communication skills.\r\nOne of the most powerful changes has been watching students who were once hesitant to participate come alive during building time. They're confident, engaged, and proud to share their designs. The joy and sense of accomplishment on their faces say it all - these tools are helping them learn through play, problem-solving together, and expressing their ideas in new ways!\r\nThank you for giving our class the chance to learn with their hands, hearts, and minds. The digital thermometers were an instant favorite—they lit up as we began our solubility experiments, where each student chose their own independent variable. Many were fascinated to test how different water temperatures affected dissolving rates, and they were thrilled to have real thermometers in their hands to collect precise data. I wish I had asked for even more, because the excitement over them was contagious!\r\n\r\nThe 3D pens have also been an incredible addition. As we explored volume, my students were able to design and build 3D shapes, which made abstract math concepts much more tangible. Being able to hold their own creations helped them understand measurement and spatial reasoning in ways that a worksheet simply never could.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my gifted and talented students are experiencing science and math in authentic, hands-on ways. They are not only building knowledge, but also confidence as problem-solvers and innovators. From the moment the box was opened, the students were eager to get started. We began by learning patriotic songs, which felt both familiar and exciting. At first, it was a challenge for students to listen carefully and wait for their turn, but soon the sounds blended together, and they were amazed to hear the full melody come to life. A highlight of this project was recording our performance for the school announcements. The pride on their faces as they listened to their music being shared with the entire school community was unforgettable.\r\n\r\nThe bells have become more than just instruments—they are tools for teamwork, patience, and creativity. Students are already asking what songs we will learn next, and I look forward to connecting the music to other lessons in history and math.
