Our school is a diverse, multicultural Title I school that is dedicated to providing students with a rigorous and relevant instructional program. I teach two equally wonderful 5th grade classes in math and science. I maintain high expectations for all students and truly believe in our students and their ability to succeed.
In my classroom, I have a wide variety of student abilities and languages, but I ensure that all students have the opportunity to be exposed to hands-on, STEAM-based learning.
More than anything, our school aims to inspire students to become well-rounded learners and individuals.
My Project
STEM education refers to the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEAM education incorporates the “A” for the arts, recognizing that to be successful in technical fields, individuals must also be creative and use critical thinking skills which are best developed through exposure to the arts. STEAM is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world.
In my classroom, I attempt to make as many opportunities as possible for hands-on STEAM experiences that incorporate service learning.
These experiences allow for students to make real world connections that will enable them to become successful in future STEM-related careers, but also become more accepting individuals. In 2016, we were fully funded for a MakerBot 3D printer. All of our projects and activities incorporated every area of STEAM. It has been an amazing and unimaginable opportunity for my students to create something our 3D printer that is able to make the world a better place.
This project will fund my tolerance service learning activities within my classroom. The MakerBot PLA filament will help my students build usable prosthetics for both humans and animals. And, there is no better way to build tolerance for humans and animals with physical disabilities than building their prosthetics. We want to change the world, right from our classroom!
