Teaching Tolerance Thru Art

My Students

Will my students be the ones to stand up for tolerance among all people? The good news is that they already have a head start! My school has a diverse background of students from many different religions, cultures, countries, and racial heritage.

I want to instill them with a tolerance for all people, no matter what their background, using art to make it happen.

Some of the students who go to school here come from families with financial means and others with moderate or deprived backgrounds. The purpose of this project is to make all feel equal and embrace that which makes us different, and that which makes us the same thru portraiture.

My Project

This project will begin with lessons on tolerance and acceptance. We will look at artwork from history and investigate what we can tell about a portrait from the clothing, the setting and various clues the artist portrays to send his message about the subject. We will compare and contrast art from a variety of artists and give opinions about the people we see.

My project will teach portraiture in art, but the underlying message will be how the people from various countries are all valued.

We will embrace what is the same and what is different about the people of the world.

The material in this project will help the students create professional, quality work. The canvases and acrylic paints will enhance the students portraits. While working on canvas, the students will know that the art they produce will be on permanent display.

I will teach the students tolerance for people who are not like them and to find the good in all people. I hope that we can get beyond skin color or clothing to define a person, but rather have his character shine thru in the portraits.
