My students ask many questions that direct their learning. They thrive on doing activities that foster creativity, problem-solving skills, and imagination.
I also consider my class as a junior United Nations.
We're a mix of race and nationalities and with this, comes a range of experiences and points of view. We embrace this uniqueness and integrate it into our daily lives within and outside the classroom walls.
We're a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) certified school that integrates all curricular areas through inquiry learning. Teaching and learning are made exciting by solving real-world problems. My students work hands-on to learn both academic and life lessons.
My Project
Books are a wonderful way to teach life lessons to students. I have a pretty expansive library and many class sets of books with a range of genres. What I don't have is a class set of books about a character with a disability.
I believe the graphic novel, El Deafo, will be an excellent medium to teach the students about struggle, acceptance, and diversity.
Many students feel isolation in one form or another and reading about a character who deals with their own issues will help students. The novel will also spark some great discussions in class. I'm also requesting a book and flash cards to teach sign language to the students. This will be an opportunity to tie in learning ASL with the novel.
