Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I once heard, "Time does not mark music, music marks time!" Music does more than mark time; it relaxes, builds vocabulary, and most importantly develops the left side of our brain known to process language. Songs imprint information on young minds.
Our students are born with many disadvantages.
They live in a high poverty area where most families are struggling to provide the basic necessities. Even with such challenges we have students eager to learn and make a better life for themselves and their families. The majority of the students are English Language Learners. Most kids do not have computers at home and in a world that values technology, they are placed at an even bigger disadvantage. At school, students are provided with some technology, but again it costs money to keep updated and replacing out of warranty items is even worse. With all the budget cuts, our classrooms have felt the effects.
My Project
Within the last two years our District has adopted two programs, a math program and a reading program, rich with technology. The learning possibilities seem endless. An obstacle we have hit is that the little technology that is available cannot reach all students. I am asking for a audio system that all students will be able to hear. Most of our curriculum already comes with interactive lessons that for the last two years, as a teacher, I have had a hard time implementing because I have had to work with only my computer speakers. The audio system will be used daily, to play songs customized to each lesson. Since the majority of my students are English Language Learners songs will develop vocabulary, process language, and imprint information. Learning will become more motivating.
Music will help inspire all children and motivate them to learn.
As an educator I am in a unique position to help keep kids focused on learning. There is music available for all areas of learning.
