Teaching Themes Through Read Alouds

My Students

My students enter the classroom eager and ready to learn. I am currently a special education teacher working with students with a wide range of disabilities. I am working on making my classroom more welcoming to my kiddos. I want them to feel comfortable and excited to be there. I hope to add new hands-on materials, flexible seating options, technology, and engaging books to enhance their learning experience. Making learning fun will help close the educational gap for my struggling learners.

My Project

This year I will continue working on teaching important life themes through daily read alouds. Each week, we pick a different theme and explore mentor texts to discover a theme/lesson that can be learned from the read aloud. Some examples of the themes we will explore are: kindness, compassion, honesty, integrity, compromise, individualism, conflict, motivation, belonging, and perseverance

These mentor texts will help me teach these critical life themes.

These books will also reinforce key reading skills; questioning, making inferences, main idea, cause/effect, and many more.

I have carefully chosen these books to connect to the above-mentioned themes. The books will be of high interest to​ my current third-grade students. They will be actively involved throughout the learning process.
