My Project
Our school is constantly receiving newcomer ENL ESL students throughout the year. All are immigrants, but the majority are refugees. As a new section of Intro to Social Studies class was formed mid-year to accommodate our new arrivals, I found myself teaching an extra class with few supplies geared towards that level. These students have been amazing and it is now my favorite class. I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow some supplies (like a globe) and we shared supplies like scissors and colored pencils. I will be teaching 3 sections of this course next year and what would really help my class would be to have some gloves and supplies. I have been teaching for 17 years in the same urban high school. My students are full of motivation to help their families adapt to their new home in America. I am full of motivation to prepare them for the following year in a mainstream Global Studies class by improving their English and their knowledge of the world around them. Many have had interrupted schooling due to war or conflict and/or gender or cultural biases.
