Teaching the Unseen World

My students need tools, such as a thermometer and electroscope, to visualize magnetic and electric fields to gain a deeper understanding of how fields work.

My Students

How can you learn about something you can't see? Magnetic and Electric fields can only be viewed by their effect on their surroundings.

My students are a mix of high achievers (Honors Physics) and those who struggle with science (Integrated Chemistry & Physics).

The honors students respond well to a challenge to understand complex phenomena, while the ICP students can gain an excitement about physics through the use of interesting and unusual demonstrations.

My Project

Visualize a Van deGraff generator shocking its surroundings, bring in close a pinwheel and it starts to spin, connect it to a small container and little balls inside hop up and down in a miniature hailstorm. Feeling frisky? Try chasing a floating tinfoil sphere around the room with a static generator wand... These tools focus on demonstrating the effect of electric and magnetic fields by responding to their presence. An electric field from a Van de Graff generator can make the requested pompoms stand out, the requested electroscope spin, or even cause a hailstorm in requested Volta's Hail Storm. Students can even get up close and personal with electrostatics if provided with the class set of charged "Fun FlySticks" - much more visual and exciting than simply playing with charged packing peanuts. Strong magnetic fields can be examined, provided by the requested Neodymium magnets and electromagnet.

All of these items demonstrate an important aspect of physics in a highly visual and entertaining way.

When students become excited about the topic of physics, they become more receptive and interested in learning about the fundamental ideas and concepts behind the "cool new effect".
