Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the reason I want to walk into my classroom every day. They are why I strive to make my lessons better each week and why I constantly seek to continue my own learning in education.
We are one of the most diverse schools in Georgia with about eighty-five percent of our students on free or reduced-price lunch.
Because of this, many of my students need not only good role models but an accepting and encouraging environment.
One of my largest passion for my kids is my literacy program. My goal is to make my kids want to read every day. In order to do this, I have implemented a large book choice project. Students get to select any book they would like to read in my class every day. My students have enthusiastically embraced this idea. However, most of my students do not have the luxury of large libraries at home or even role models that are readers. I have students that come to my room Friday afternoon begging to borrow their book from my shelf to read over the weekend.
My Project
I have chosen a diverse collection of new and exciting books for my classroom library. In my class, I have students read a book of choice every day. This helps students not only build reading stamina but also helps my students to learn that reading can be an enjoyable experience. Most of my children come to my class having never read an entire book.
By supplying my class with these high-interest and diverse books, you will be helping me show my students that they can actually love reading.
I work tirelessly to constantly update my library to make sure I include anything and everything that might spark interest in my students and get them to finish that first book.
