This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students love to express their learning through project-based assignments and one of our parents just donated Adobe Photoshop software for our computer lab. Unfortunately, two more are needed, including one for the teacher. We will use the software and mouse pads for several integrated technology projects.
Our K-5 urban community of students numbers 378.
A common theme with these public school children is that they often come from backgrounds with inconsistent access to resources for 21st century learning; that includes home as well as school. We can't change the environment at home, but we want to provide as much as we can for them in their school environment.
My Project
Most of our students don't have a computer at home and receive most of their 21st century education at school. Almost all of them will only gain experience using programs such as Adobe Photoshop by working on projects that support the curriculum they are learning in their classrooms. These K-5 students are creative, energetic and eager to learn, despite the challenges they face at home. Many of the students live in poverty and want to do better in life.
We jokingly call the computers in our library and our technology lab the Millennium Falcon because they are constantly breaking down.
As a library media specialist, I consider it my professional responsibility to make sure that our students become proficient at developing information literacy skills. "Sarah" comes into the computer lab and tells me that she wants to be a zoologist and a cartoonist on the side when she grows up. I want to see that she is provided with the equipment and instruction in order to meet that dream.
We are taking little steps to improve the technology integrated curriculum at our school in order for our students to receive a comparable education to students who have more choices in the resources provided for them.
I want our students to have equity of opportunity, but we can't do that without help from those who want to help in that endeavor.
