My Students

Do you remember being given a book that at first looked old and boring, but absolutely falling in love with it once the entire class started reading it together? Those are my students this year! They came to me uninterested in reading novels and are now thirsty to start our next book! My 6th grade students come from a variety of socioeconomic and culturally diverse backgrounds. Some of them have never read an entire novel before let alone owned their own copy of a book. Many of my students are still learning English and being able to do book studies, help them to understand what they are reading. They want to learn and have come to appreciate literature and the talented authors that bring the story to life. It is wonderful to see my student’s love for reading grow!

My Project

I'm asking for an entire class set of the novel City of Ember. My students track their reading by asking questions as they read, make connections, draw images that pop in their head, find unfamiliar vocabulary words, make comments about surprising things they've read, and summarize at the end of chapters. They use post-its and stick it everywhere in their book.

Reading The City of Ember will assist in increasing reading comprehension, spark interest in reading, and is easily integrated with science standards on sustainability!

I teach both subject areas and being able to make it more meaningful for my students is always a plus!
