Teaching STEM and 3D Printing at GHS

My students need to be literate in the STEM classes, and students need to practice STEM. This project includes a 3D printer, and the filament that goes into it.

My Students

Our science classes are hands-on, engaged lessons. The school has started using modeling to teach the lessons, and we are integrating STEM in our classes. At the end of the year, I want my students to be able to be literate with engineering and CAD practices, and productive members of society.

I teach in a fairly rural community, with many of my students on track to become doctors, lawyers, and engineers.

This is no small feat. The socioeconomics of the area may normally preclude students from attending college, but they work hard and persevere to be able to attend. My students all need to be literate in the 21st century language of technology, STEM, and to become productive members of society. The 3-D printer in this grant will mesh with the school's technology, and allow them to learn to use CAD software, and to prototype parts for their classes.

My Project

The 3D printer and filament would eventually become a self-sustaining project. We use the school computers and iPads to use online CAD authoring software, and can downloaded the completed projects to computers. The 3-D printer allows students to create their projects in a physical means, versus digital. This shows them the need for tolerances, clearances, and how to engineer a part that is functional. This 3-D printer will allow students to create their own projects as well, and through payment for the filament, will help cover the cost of future consumables.

The students are already excited about the prospect of borrowing a printer from an area school to see their projects in real life.

The use of modeling and 3-D printing and CAD in class has already brought an interest into engineering into my students' lives.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
