We are now two months into the school year and my class of 25 first graders is practicing addition, writing small moment stories, learning sight words, and reading each day. Our class is full of enthusiasm for learning, and students are eager to gain new skills in all subjects! We are not only learning academic skills, but social-emotional skills are a part of our daily learning as students figure out how to navigate friendships and solve conflicts.
Our school serves a diverse community of mostly working-class families, including many English language learners.
With district budget cuts and limited school funds, it can be difficult to provide high-quality supplies for our students to succeed and receive the education each child deserves. This is where you come in!
My Project
This project mostly focuses on providing a variety of books that I can use to teach social-emotional skills to my first graders. With our academic subjects in full swing, I am noticing that my students need support practicing kindness, empathy, and self-control.
These skills are extremely important so that our youngest generation of learners will become responsible members of our community.
Reading stories out loud to students is a great way to teach lessons and provide tangible examples of these behaviors. These books will provide talking points and model these traits for my students.
This project also includes other classroom basics including crayons, writing pens (that my students love to use during writers workshop!), and book bins for organizing all of the new books.
