Teaching Shakespeare Without Fear

My students need a class set (30 books) of No Fear Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to read with the ease of the original text and a modern translation side-by-side.

My Students

The story of Romeo and Juliet is probably the most well-known story of all time and has influenced countless movies, books, and songs in our culture--from Twilight to Taylor Swift. The language of Shakespeare, however, is intimidating to any ninth grade reader, especially a struggling one.

I teach ninth grade English in a rural community where many of my students are struggling and reluctant readers.

Many who come to my classroom hate reading and may have never read a book for enjoyment. These students are not finding meaningful engagement in the classroom and do not see the connection between school and their lives at home, prompting many to drop out and never realize their potential for higher education through a technical school or four-year university.

My Project

My students don't think they will be able to get Shakespeare and certainly don't think the story of Romeo and Juliet has any connection to their lives, but nothing could be further from the truth. The story contains all of the elements they love in movies--romance, rebellious teens, violence--as long as they can understand the language well enough to enjoy it. In the past I have used an adapted version, but I feel too much of the beauty of Shakespeare's language is lost. With the No Fear Shakespeare series the original text is printed on the left and the modern English translation is printed on the right. This gives my students the best of both worlds--we can read and appreciate the language of Shakespeare while having the safety net of a modern translation to keep my struggling readers from getting lost along the way, especially due to absence. This will give us more time to spend analyzing and discussing the characters and themes on a deeper level in class.

By engaging students in Shakespeare and making the connections between the events and themes in Romeo and Juliet and the world they live in, my students will be more willing to come to school each day and learning the material.

Many of my students are at risk of not graduating from high school, and I believe by showing them the relevance of what we are learning they will be more likely to come to school, stay in school, and prepare for college or technical training.
