Teaching Reading & Writing with Social Justice Content

My students need chart paper, in-class learning logs (notebooks), and these three unit-launching videos.

My Students

I am teaching my students to think critically and deeply about social justice issues that have a direct impact in their lives. The class is run like a college seminar, with ample time for students to think, write, and talk about the issues we're discussing.

My 11th grade social justice students are great thinkers and talkers, but they've been short-changed by the system, and they are not the best readers and writers--yet!

All of my students are African American, and almost all on the "free and reduced lunch" program. They almost all want to go to college (I had two exceptions from about 150 students last year).

My Project

The notebooks, which will be used in class for students to record their thoughts and learning about the topics we're discussing, will allow me to keep up with every student's thinking and writing development on a daily basis. The chart paper will give students the opportunity to collaborate on lessons focused on comprehension strategies (synthesis & summarizing, especially). My class is focused on teaching reading & writing by focusing on social justice topics. These videos will allow me to build my students' background knowledge--they will be used to launch units on global warming, media as a watchdog (or not), and various other units (the 30 Days series covers immigration, poverty, minimalism, religious tolerance, LGBT, animal rights, and other issues).

Last year, I required that students purchase their own notebooks, which delayed our effectiveness out of the gate.

With notebooks and chart paper, plus the unit-launch videos, we'll be able to hit the ground running, from the start. By focusing on topics with huge inherent investment from the kids, we make excellent progress on the skills these kids will need for college applications, interviews, and classes.
