My Students
My students attend a Title I school in the heart of New York. They are special needs students and English language learners, which makes learning challenging. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds, with all of them qualifying for free lunch. The school's population is very ethnically diverse as well. We serve a rising number of Hispanic and African students. Needless to say, students come to school with their own unique set of struggles and successes.
One thing the students have in common, though, is their love for school and learning.
I hope to create an environment at school and at home that meets their unique needs.
My Project
Helping children with special needs express their feelings in the classroom is such an important part of allowing students to meet their full potential. Using art to make a mindfulness scrapbook will help my students learn what makes them calm and feel good. The scrapbook and art supplies will allow the students to record favorite quotes and moments. The photo printer will allow the students to print their favorite photos directly from their phones. These pictures will be added to their scrapbooks as calming moments. Many students with disabilities have a hard time socializing with their peers. These crafts will help bridge that gap. Art and crafts also help students think critically and with logic in a way that produces less anxiety. This will also help the students to transfer these critical thinking skills into all their classes, thus making them better students.
Art and crafts are essential supplies in a special needs class because it will help students to focus and be able to think and work with others.
To succeed in an unconventional classroom requires unconventional items that would best meet their needs: this is one idea behind differentiated instruction.
