Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many of my students are in survival mode and work jobs that contribute to household and essential expenses. Sometimes those adult responsibilities cloud their focus and ability to see the real, long-term goals for themselves.

I teach a student population that is:

*96.3% economically disadvantaged

*many newcomers

*many in abject poverty (beyond free & reduced lunch)

*74.4% English language learners

*18% in special education

I help my students organize their interactive student notebooks by color coding each unit. For each unit they have these learning strategies on matching colors:

Summary page that contains the learning standards & essential questions

Student-created central theme brain map

Study notecards

Many of my students are first generation to the country and/or are on track to be first generation graduates. They don’t have study habits built into their normal mentor influences as often as a lot of students do. I want to teach them the best ways to understand concepts and track their progress and learning. We will create a collective vision board and then organize central scientific themes by color in each strategy throughout the year.

Creating these color coded concept maps and study materials will help students build stronger habits of organization and comprehension of scientific themes and concepts. Thank you for your consideration.
