Imagine trying to learn math without even the paper you need to show your work on?
I teach 6th grade mathematics in an inner city Boston Public Middle School.
My classes include advanced students who are preparing to enter into competitive exam schools as well as regular education students. Many of my regular education students arrive in class with reading skills well below grade level, some as low as 2nd and 3rd grade reading skills! You can imagine that word problems present some difficulties!
My Project
Our math curriculum is a reading intensive, exploratory curriculum. A strategy that my students are taught in English class (which we also use in math class) is "marking the text". This means underlining important words and numbers, circling the question, and showing work so that students understand exactly what they need to do. Unfortunately, students are not allowed to use this strategy in textbooks that need to be shared with other students. In addition, the paper needed to make copies for students is not provided by our school.
We also have a classroom computer and printer from which students can print out extra math work and papers they write for English class. Ink for this printer is not provided by the school. Your donation would purchase this ink so students can once again use this resource.
Your donation will provide a resource that most people assume every student has access to: the paper on which to highlight important information and show their work.
Your gift will give my students the opportunity to use this successful strategy as just another tool in their toolbox for success.
