My students have a wide variety of needs and expectations. They are each unique individuals who express themselves differently, who learn differently, and who require different things. As a teacher of students with special needs as well as general education students, each day is a new learning experience not only for my students, but also for me.
In my classroom, I have students from different backgrounds, students who speak various languages, students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and many other emotional, physical, and learning needs.
Each day is a new opportunity for me to challenge my students, keep them engaged, and keep them motivated to learn. Providing them with the opportunity to choose their seats, is a simple way to help me reach that goal on a daily basis. Not only will this allow for comfort, but it will encourage collaboration amongst students as well.
My Project
These supplies will help my students grasp topics they may not understand otherwise. In order to address the specific needs of my special needs students, I must supply them with experiences that will help prepare them for their future. Counting money is a skill necessary for adult life, yet many children lack this basic ability. With these supplies, my students will be given hands-on opportunities to practice real-life situations in my classroom.
Manipulatives are especially important to provide these learning experiences for my students.
They allow students to transport themselves to a time and place, which therefore leads to a better learning experience and overall understanding.
Additionally, we are asking for whiteboard lapboards and white erase markers to assist with assessment in the classroom. Lapboards are an engaging way for students to share their answers with their teacher and/or classmates. This is a different method that allows the students to practice independently in a more fun and interactive manner.
We are also asking for a class set of privacy boards also to assist with assessment. Many of my students have learning disabilities and deficits, including focusing, especially during an independent task. These privacy boards will help minimize distractions for these students during independent practice and assessments.
