Teaching Math and Science Through Cooking

My students need cooking tools. In addition to the usual cooking amenities, my students need some modified cooking equipment such as an electric can opener, choppers, and modified peelers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all students with Autism. They range in grade from ninth to tenth but they are all on the Alternative Curriculum. In addition, they are all considered Intellectually Disabled and some have further issues such as speech and orthopedic challenges. They are on a general education high school campus and are in a self-contained Autism classroom for all academic subjects. The school is primarily Hispanic and has an overall low socioeconomic status.

Imagine a classroom lesson that incorporates science, math, self-help, and social skills all in one.

This is my goal for my class. I want my students to learn through hands-on exploration that will not only teach them functional academics, but will help them succeed in life. Currently, our district has an alternative curriculum program that incorporates cooking activities each month to reinforce concepts and engage students. I am unable to complete these activities as we lack cooking equipment, and many of my students require adaptive equipment such as an electric can opener or a push chopper for safety and due to orthopedic impairments.

My Project

“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.”

― Aristotle

The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will enhance both their academic and vocational education. The pots and pans, knives, cutting mats, and mixing bowls will be the staples we need to begin a cooking-based academic curriculum. The measuring implements will be the tools used to enhance the students' mathematical skills. The choppers, peelers, electric can openers, and mixers will be the adaptive tools that help my students with orthopedic impairments to independently create their own culinary masterpieces.

The donations to this project will help to improve my students' mathematical, scientific, and life skills.

By cooking as a means of instruction for math and science, my students will begin to truly understand the concepts they are learning. My students tend to learn best by actually performing the task. We will use these materials to gain an understanding of addition and measurement as well as chemical changes. We will also use these materials to aid us in the process of becoming independent adults who are able to prepare our own meals at home. The few times I have personally funded culinary learning, I have found that the students are excited and engaged in the activity. With these materials, my students will be able to develop a sense of accomplishment and pride that math and science worksheets just cannot offer. Any help to make this dream a reality would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
