My Students

Girls are typically taught that engineering is a boy's field. Through the study of robotics, these girls will find that this is no true and that girls are just as capable as boys when it comes to solving engineering challenges involving robots.

Out school is a high-minority, low socioeconomic school in rural Arizona.

There are no other outlets for students who are interested in technology, engineering, and robots at our school other than our robotics team. The girls on the team are excited about designing, building, programming, testing, and analyzing the performance of robots. They are fond of saying "Real women know how to solder." and call themselves "Solder Queens".

My Project

The requested boe-bot kits and multimeters will provide the girls with the opportunity to build and program basic robots and analyze their performance. Once the basic roots are constructed, the girls will modify and augment their robots to meet a variety of design objectives, such as navigating a maze, locating and retrieving an object, and compete in sumo-type competitions. They will also be able to experiment with a variety of sensor devices such as ultrasonic, infrared, temperature, and pressure transducers as well as micro-switches to allow their robots to respond to their environments. The girls will gain a better appreciation of and experience of engineering design and engineering analysis as they work in teams to solve their design challenges.

Women are underrepresented in engineering and projects such as this inspire young women to pursue higher education and careers in engineering.

These girls will be the ones to solve the many problems confronting our society and your generosity may help to inspire one of the great problem solvers of the next generation. Robotics will open the door to the future for these girls. Help make that future a reality.
