My Project
My school is located in an industrial city on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Our student body is diverse and made up of roughly 1,100 students. We have students from a wide array of backgrounds. Some have traveled around the country and world, while others have never left the Gulf Coast. We also have an increasing population of students from outside the country, primarily from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
I teach African American Studies and US History to a fantastic group of kids.
My classes consist of 9th through 12th graders with a range of abilities and backgrounds which greatly enriches the learning experience in the classroom. My students are fun and curious critical thinkers. Because of them, I thoroughly enjoy my job and I feel blessed to be able to teach in such a rich, cultural environment.
In order to teach students important life and financial skills, as well as keep them engaged, I am using ClassroomEquity.com to create a classroom economy with all my classes. Students earn "money" (pretend money) for various jobs they apply for in the classroom. They can also earn bonuses for displaying our core values of kindness, integrity, determination, and excellence. Students can also be fined for off-task and negative behaviors. This also serves to build community and reward students when they display positive behaviors. If my project is funded, students can spend their "money" on these snacks and supplies in our classroom store.
