Students at Open School come from many aspects of our world. We are a very socioeconomic diverse group of students who have chosen an alternative and progressive style of education, rather than a conventional school. We love to find experiential and hands-on learning as often as possible. This means we are often traveling to different areas in our community as well as fundraising to take trips anywhere from a pristine local state park to the excitement of New York City.
My students love learning, especially with rich resources and experiences to deepen their understanding.
With little resources for education in Colorado, we rely on the creativity of the staff and families to continue our quest for the best education and experiences. In this time of eLearning, I want my students to continue to have access to books and other media to fulfill their need for connection to one another, as well as stretching their thinking.
My Project
Now is the time to immerse students in the history of the United States and anti-racism. Everywhere you look, you see white teachers begging for resources from BIPOC authors to find the best way to teach about race. Our unit will take traditional social studies books along with novels and non-fiction writings about the history of race in the United States. Student will create questions and projects based on their readings, documentaries, and discussions. They will drive the content and learning with rich resources suggested by various sources.
Students want to learn how to become anti-racists.
They want rich resources. They want stories that are meaningful and important. These books will support their learning.
