My students attend a large school that is Title I. We get limited funding each year and need technology to continue to move into the 21st century. I am a special education resource teacher, meaning that all of my students have a variety of learning disorders, intellectual disabilities, behavior plans, or other complications that make it difficult for them to succeed in the academic setting.
By providing them with the necessary items, students are able to complete assignments as their peers do, just in a different format.
The special education team serves students in the resource room and in their academic classroom.
My Project
Being a teacher of a third grade classroom means not only providing education but also providing life lessons to my students. The book Wonder teaches compassion, acceptance, caring, understanding, love, and so many more lessons.
A class set of this inspiring book would be used for a book study with the impressionable minds in my classroom.
It would teach key literary elements that are aligned with the standards, and it would also be an opportunity to teach their hearts.
Being a previous special education teacher, I have seen the first-hand the effects of bullying of children who do not look the same as others or learn the same as others. This book will help open the eyes of my students and allow them to take these important lessons with them throughout life. The students will read designated pages and then be placed into groups to discuss what they have read. Creating an open dialog about our differences will allow the students to grow and learn from each other!
The DVD will be used to watch after we have completed the book study. Showing the movie will give my students who have difficulty with reading comprehension a visual representation of the book.
