Fifth graders are amazing, flourishing young people. They are ready to take on the world, but also have some doubts about putting themselves out there. I am proud to co-teach 60 of these wonderful humans about the power of YET.
My students work on developing a growth mindset where they can take chances, make mistakes, and try again.
Each year we teach about growth mindset versus fixed mindset. Students begin to see they have more control over their choices. We work on setting goals--personal and academic-- making plans to achieve the goals, reviewing the goals and celebrating success. We want our students to know it is ok to fail. We give them strategies to use to help them along the way to success.
One student soaked in the growth mindset teachings. At first, she thought she would never be as good at math as her sister, so why try. But with growth mindset, she made new choices about her learning. She wanted to get better at math. She put posters around her room with positive quotes; she asked and received a tutor; she did her homework. With hard work, she started seeing improvement. There are many success stories!
My Project
I teach about growth mindset to help my students believe they can do anything! During weekly class meetings, we work collaboratively and independently to learn more about ourselves. The Big Life Journal is full of supportive activities, stories, and lessons targeting skills to succeed. I will use it to complement our discussions. There are activities teaching about brain research, how to find a mentor and much more.
By donating to this project, you can help my fifth graders to understand that they are in charge of their achievements.
Students will begin to understand who they are now and what they know now isn’t fixed. Brains can grow; so can their intelligence. Using these journals will make a difference in their futures.
