My Students

I am a special education teacher at a very small, very rural Title I middle school in North Carolina where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. State funding for EC was cut drastically and while the district tries, it has limited resources. Most of my students have never traveled out of the county, and yet they DREAM BIG!

While the students I teach have deficits academically and limited resources, they are motivated and want to rule the world someday...

My Project

This year I decided to dream big, and ask for help buying supplies for my classroom. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, and most of the students show up without a pencil. What I have learned is that if I provide the pencils and paper, and when needed markers, crayons, colored pencils, tape, staplers/staples, erasers, glue sticks, scissors, etc... I get participation, instead of excuses.

Unfortunately, it is expensive to buy supplies for the year.

While most of the items I asked for are stuff that I buy every year, there are two items I "WISH" I could afford, the rug and twinkle lights. I know, most people would say, it's middle school why the art supplies, rug and lights? I have found a very neat way to get the students to practice their math facts, fractions, equivalents, etc... and it involves crayons, markers, or colored pencils. I also do an interactive notebook with my students, which is why we need glue and scissors. The rug and lights, well those make the classroom homier and the kids respond to them.
