Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Many of us claim to be lifelong learners, but how many of us get involved in learning that changes our world for the better? After working with NOAA as a Teacher At Sea, I want my students to become INVOLVED! Not only in reading about the oceans and atmosphere, but by working to protect them.

My Third graders will just make you smile.

With each new class, I am reminded why I became, and still am, a teacher. I have had hugs, laughter, tears, questions, and 4 lost teeth, and this is only the first week of school! Even though 100% of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch, they are excited and eager to learn. Our large urban school will be one hundred years old this year, but over 30% of my students are new to our country. With these new materials I hope to teach reading with a purpose as I connect learning to read, student excitement, and my passion for understanding our oceans into actions that could inspire a true lifetime of learning for my students.

My Project

The ocean related non-fiction reading materials I am requesting will be the beginning of our multidisciplinary unit of study to build ocean literacy. First, I will share my experiences as a NOAA Teacher at Sea. Then the excitement builds as we continue researching targeted topics of interest as students prepare to write their own ocean themed books, build ocean models, create hallway displays, and finally write persuasive letters to local representatives petitioning for the protection of oceans and ocean life. The donations of these books not only support newly mandated non-fiction reading standards, they will be the tools that help this video game generation of third graders win at environmental understanding and community advocacy.

Shark week!

Live in October.... These new ocean themed non-fiction titles I am requesting will let my students know there is more to the oceans than sharks and sand. Join us in our discoveries!
