My Students

My students come to our school for the challenge. Many are bright and articulate but need more challenges, greater responsibility, and deeper content to achieve their full potential. They come from a mixed group of low to high income, traditional, single-parent, and nontraditional homes, and various educational backgrounds and achievement levels.

My students enjoy reading literary classics to discover the good, the true, and the beautiful.

Despite the challenges in reading texts fifty to a hundred or more years old, they have dived into reading Shakespeare, Harper Lee, William Golding, Ray Bradbury, and Edmund Rostand. They want to experience the truths of humanity that these writers observed and tried to express. Even more so, they want to learn to live as the noble life of heroes and avoid the ugly lives of villains. They seek their future through close reading of the beautiful literature of the past.

My Project

Education books are often expensive, but they are filled with great resources for the teacher. This project seeks funding to cover the cost of recommended teacher books from Kelly Gallagher and others that will aid me in improving writing and reading skills for my middle school students. I have also requested some basic supplies that we need in order to continue working well in writing. I will use these to help my students organize and write essays.

Reading and writing are essential for life.

If my students do not have these foundational skills, all further pursuits, no matter what they are, will be difficult, even impossible. It is essential that I improve my teaching skills through self-study and life-long learning so that my students can reap the benefits.

I have also requested a few additional items. I use video materials so that we can meet standards requiring the analysis of multiple presentations of similar text (book, movie, play, etc.) but the speakers in my classroom are poor and often buzz. We also read Cyrano de Bergerac in my 7th grade classroom, but I do not have any good video presentations, so I have requested a recommended copy.
