My Students

Have you seen the Common Core State Standards for writing in Kindergarten? They want my students to write an opinion, informative text, and narrative in kindergarten! Many of them can't even write their names in September! We better get writing!

My students are kindergarteners in a high poverty elementary school in Delaware.

I have 44 students (22 in the morning and 22 in the afternoon) with a wide range of abilities, including special education students. My students are a part of the "Spanish Immersion" program that is new to our school. They learn reading and writing in English half of the day and math and science in Spanish the other half of the day.

My Project

Since I only have half of a day to teach my students to read and write, I want to give them as many opportunities as I can to practice their reading and writing skills independently. When students are finished with a task and need something to do, I normally let them read a book. Since our school is focusing on the Common Core State Standards for writing, I want them to ask to go to the new writing center or to grab their new journals. The more opportunities my students get to write, the better writers they will become!

Your donation will be greatly appreciated and will impact 44 students this year and many more students in the years to come.

I want to instill a love of writing in my students by making it fun and inviting. I want all of my students to exceed the standards and be able to write an opinion, explanatory text, and narrative. I want to give them the foundation they need to become great authors in the future!
