Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
John Dewey once said, "If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." I cannot agree more with this.
My students live in a high poverty area of the city.
Many of my students come from broken homes and some even reside in the local homeless shelters and motels. Sadly, my students do not have viable academic resources at home. Education isn't regularly touted in their homes. Higher education is an abstract idea and isn't talked about. Their academic, social, and emotional needs are met at their school with the help of caring teachers and administrators.
My Project
I currently teach 6th grade English Language Arts. Many of my students are struggling readers who have a very negative view towards reading. They have little desire to pick up a book and view reading as a chore. My goal is for my students to discover and foster a love for reading. I feel that an Apple iPad might be just the trick to for my reluctant readers to encounter reading in a new, exciting way. With an Apple iPad, my students will be able to increase their reading fluency and comprehension, do research projects, download books, create videos and so much more. My audio, visual and tactile learners would all benefit equally from the iPad.
The iPad would give my students endless possibilities with their learning.
With a simple touch, my students will be able to increase their writing, communication and technological skills, thus leading to increased literacy. Donations to this project would open up their world and help them achieve academic success. Thank you.
