Tapping into STEM Education: Using iPads to Enhance Learning

My Students

Technology in the classroom has revolutionized the way students learn. Having access to technology for all students, however, is easier said than done.

My students are all going to be turning 5 this year.

They are energetic, curious, and very excited to learn new things. Our school is a Title I school and we face certain challenges. With a high population of English Language Learners, 4 special education classrooms on campus that require mainstreaming for their students, and 44% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch, for many of my students school is the only place where they can have access to technology or receive feedback about their progress. Despite these challenges we all work together to make our classroom the most successful environment that it can be.

My Project

The iPad is a tool that allows students opportunities to engage in higher levels of learning. My students will become more engaged in their learning because they will be able to learn kinesthetically, visually, and by auditory means. We will be using these iPads to explore the world around us. I will be creating STEM lessons with these iPads by teaching lessons about volcanoes, life cycles, weather, etc... and then send the students in small groups to look together on their iPads at stunning visuals and watch short videos based around the scientific concept we have just studied. These visual aids are very important when teaching my young students and my ESL students who may be hearing certain key vocabulary terms for the first time. I will also be able to download math based apps that will help the students master crucial skills while the iPad gives them instant feedback on their progress. The iPad is the perfect learning tool to meet the diverse needs of my young students.

The incorporation of technology when teaching STEM based lessons allows for students to explore all aspects of the concepts we are teaching them.

Sadly, for many of my students the classroom is their only opportunity to interact with technology and use it to broaden their horizons. Please help my students become experts in STEM education and keep learning fun and exciting with the gift of technology.
